Johns Hopkins Downs 25th-Ranked Shenandoah, 3-1

WINCHESTER, VA – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team scored twice in the fourth quarter to beat host and 25th-ranked Shenandoah Sunday afternoon in non-conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 2-0 on the season while the Hornets fall to 1-1.

The Blue Jays got on the board with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.  Sophomore Grace Waldeck fired a shot on cage from in tight and it rebounded out to junior Emily Amsden, who one-timed the ball past Taylor Swan to give JHU the lead. The lead lasted just about 10 minutes and then the Hornets drew even on a penalty corner. Farren Winter found Elizabeth Ranberger for the score just 5:02 into the third quarter.

Hopkins retook the lead when junior Jenna Halpin banged home a loose ball in the circle with 10:01 to play in the game. Senior Alexis Loder then stopped a Shenandoah penalty stroke to keep the Blue Jays on top. Senior Siena Urbanski responded on the other end with a goal off a feed from classmate Mikayla Schoff at the 58:42-mark.

Hopkins outshot Shenandoah, 15-6, and had an 11-4 advantage in corners. Loder finished with three saves in the win while Swann made seven for the Hornets.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 6 when the Blue Jays travel to 13th-ranked York. The non-conference tilt is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.

Notes: Hopkins improves to 2-0 all-time against Shenandoah • Urbanski now has 20 career goals and needs just one to move into a tied for 22nd in program history.
