Blue Jays, Captains Set for First All-Time Meeting

The Game
«  Johns Hopkins (1-0) plays the second of two straight games at home to open the season as the Blue Jays welcome Christopher Newport (1-0) to Baltimore for the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

A Look Back
«  Johns Hopkins opened the season with a 27-17 victory against ninth-ranked (D3football.com) Ithaca last Saturday at Homewood Field.
« CNU also picked up a win in its opener as the Captains topped Southern Virginia, 45-0.

The Facts
«  This is the 138th season of Johns Hopkins football.  JHU first fielded a team in 1882.
«  Johns Hopkins enters this week's game with an all-time record of 585-489-57 (.543).
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 121-20 (.858) overall and 98-10 (.907) in the Centennial Conference.
«  Overall, JHU owns 15 Centennial Conference titles (all won since 2002) and has qualified for the NCAA Playoffs 11 times (all since 2005).

Poll Position
«  Johns Hopkins jumped four spots to number 14 in this week's D3football.com Poll.
« Since the D3football.com Poll debuted in 2003, this is the 138th time Johns Hopkins has appeared in the top 25.
« The AFCA Poll, the other official poll conducted at the Division III level, will debut for the 2023 season later in September.

For Openers
«  With the win last week against Ithaca, Johns Hopkins has won its last 12 season openers dating back to 2011.
«  During the 12-game winning streak in season openers, the Blue Jays have outscored the opposition 504-211 and only three of the 12 games have been decided by 15 points or less.

Home Openers
«  Including last week's win, Johns Hopkins has won three straight and 11 of its last 12 home openers dating back to 2011.  The only loss in that time was a 28-27 setback to Susquehanna in 2019.
« Dating back to 2008, the Blue  Jays are 13-2 in their last 15 home openers with the two losses coming by a total of four points (28-27 to Susquehanna in 2019 and 30-27 to Muhlenberg in 2010).

Sweet September
«  Dating back to 2010, Johns Hopkins is now 46-4 in the month of September.
«  Also dating back to 2010, the Blue Jays are 22-1 at home and 24-3 on the road in the month of September.

Centennial-NJAC
«  This week's game kicks off a three-game run of games for Johns Hopkins against teams from the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC).
« Starting this season, the Centennial Conference and the NJAC signed a scheduling a agreement that provides all teams in both leagues with three crossover games against teams from the other league.
« As chance would have it, Johns Hopkins drew the task of playing the three teams that ranked first (Salisbury), second (Christopher Newport) and third (Rowan) in the 2023 NJAC Preseason Poll.

Program Ties
« Two Blue Jay assistants have close ties to the CNU program as defensive backs coach BJ Hill and defensive line coach Rio Byrd both played for the Captains.
« Hill graduated in 2018 after totaling 163 tackles, 16 PBUs and five interceptions - he was a two-time Honorable Mention All-NJAC selection during his career.
« Byrd graduated in 2020 and got his coaching career started there as well.  He played in 23 games from 2017-19 and recorded 35 tackles, including 2.5 for losses, one pass breakup, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery during his career.

At Home at Homewood
«  Johns Hopkins ran its home winning streak to a school-record 13 games (dating back to 2019)  with the season-opening win against Ithaca.
« The 13-game home winning streak breaks the previous record of 12 straight wins. JHU has twice (2014-15 / 2017-18) won 12 consecutive home games.
«  Since the start of the 2010 season, the Blue Jays are 60-7 (.896) at Homewood Field.

Harvey Extends QB Streak at 12
«  Junior Bay Harvey got the start at quarterback in last week's game against Ithaca.  With the victory, he extend a remarkable streak for Johns Hopkins starting quarterbacks that dates back 17 years to the 2006 season.
« Including Harvey's' win, 12 consecutive Johns Hopkins quarterbacks have won their first career start for the Blue Jays, a streak that started with Shane Kibbe's 21-14 win over Randolph-Macon early in that 2006 season.
« Under the direction of those first-time starting quarterbacks, Johns Hopkins has scored at least 327 or more points 10 straight times under the direction of a first-time starter at quarterback.

Craddock Honored
«  Junior Oliver Craddock made the first start of his career one to remember as he posted 13 tackles to lead the Blue Jay defense in the 27-17 win over Ithaca.
« For his efforts against the Bombers, Craddock was named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
« Craddock's 13 tackles are the most by a Johns Hopkins player in a season opener since James Closser had 13 in a 63-31 win over Randolph-Macon in 2018.

Instant Impact
«  Freshman Cole Crotty wasted little time making an impact on the Blue Jay football program as he shined in his career debut in last week's 27-17 win over Ithaca.
« Crotty had three receptions for a team-high 83 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Bombers.
« Crotty's first career reception went for a 54-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter that gave the Blue Jays a 14-10 lead they would never relinquish.  He added a 27-yard touchdown catch late in the third quarter that pushed the lead to 27-10.

« Although some data is incomplete, there is no record of another freshman scoring two touchdowns in a season-opening game for Johns Hopkins dating back to 1972.

18 Straight
« The Blue Jay offense scored at least 24 points in all 11 games last season and, after last week's 27-point showing against Ithaca, has reached that mark in 18 straight games dating back to midway through the 2021 season.
