Smith Named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Senior LB Paced Blue Jays with Career-High 14 Tackles

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins senior linebacker Jack Smith has been named the Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Blue Jays to a 42-14 season-opening victory at Ithaca on Saturday.  The victory was the 14th straight in a season-opener for the third-ranked Blue Jays.  This is the first time in Smith's career that he has earned a Player of the Week award from the Centennial Conference.

Smith made the first start of his career one to remember as he posted a career-high 14 tackles, was in on half a sack and added a pass breakup to lead the way defensively for the Blue Jays.  His efforts fueled a Blue Jay defense that held the Bombers to just 282 yards of total offense, including just 88 on the ground.  The Johns Hopkins defense held Ithaca off the board until late in the third quarter, registered five sacks and had two interceptions and one fumble recovery in the victory.

Johns Hopkins (1-0) will host John Carroll (1-0) in its home opener on Saturday, September 13 (12 pm).
