BALTIMORE, MD – Senior
Liz Falterer scored the game's only goal late in the fourth quarter to lead fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 1-0 win over Haverford in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays improve to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the CC, while the Fords slip to 6-5 and 2-2.
Falterer's first goal of the season couldn't have come at a better time as goalie Mary Smith and the Fords' defense had kept the Blue Jays at bay for close to 55 minutes. Senior
Ava Balacek nearly broke the scoreless tie with 6:10 to play with a shot at the back post that eluded Smith, but Naomi York cleared it off the line.
Hopkins capitalized on its 15
th and final penalty corner of the afternoon less than a minute later to take the lead. Senior
Jenna Halpin received Balacek's corner insert and passed to
Lila Slattery at the top of the circle. She settled the ball and then hit a hard shot that Falterer tipped down and around Smith for what turned out to be the game-winner.
Hopkins finished with an 18-1 advantage in shots and a 15-2 lead in corners. Sophomore
Aubrey Kilgore made one save to earn the shutout while Smith finished with 10 for the Fords.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 16 as the Blue Jays visit Washington College. The Centennial Conference game is scheduled for a 7:00 pm start.
