Johns Hopkins Bests Washington College, 5-1

CHESTERTOWN, MD – Five different Blue Jays scored to lead fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins to a 5-1 win at Washington College Wednesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 12-2 overall and 6-0 in the Centennial Conference while the Shorewomen fall to 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

Hopkins wasted little time getting on the board as the visitors scored just 3:56 into the game. Senior Sophie Gomez sent a long pass to classmate Emily Amsden at the top of the circle. Amsden settled the pass and hit a hard reverse into the top of the cage.

The Blue Jays doubled their lead midway through the second quarter in the first of what turned out to be three goals in just 2:01. Gomez picked up her second helper of the night when she found sophomore Sophia Albano open on the right side, and she slipped shot between Charlotte Schurman and the post at 22:39. Just 35 seconds later Kat Esposito chipped a shot over sophomore Aubrey Kilgore to make it a 2-1 game. Junior Grace Waldeck capped the flurry of scoring at the 24:40-mark when she collected a rebound in the circle and fired it past Schurman.

Sophomore Caeli Robinson put Hopkins on top 4-1 at 50:31 as the Blue Jays cashed in on a penalty corner. Freshman Kaitlin Coward inserted the corner to Robinson on the near side, she took one touch and then fired a hard shot into the back of the cage. Five and a half minutes later, graduate student Lila Slattery intercepted a pass and sprung a three-on-one deep in the offensive end. Amsden dribbled into the circle, drew the defender and then centered the ball to junior Megan Chang, who scored on a one-timer.

Kilgore finished with two saves to earn the win while Schurman made seven in the loss. Hopkins finished with a 27-5 advantage in shots and a 7-2 edge in corners.

Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, October 19 as the Blue Jays travel to 10th-ranked Bryn Mawr. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
