BALTIMORE, MD – Visiting Swarthmore scored on a penalty stroke with 1:28 remaining in the first overtime to upset fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. The Blue Jays see their eight-game win streak snapped as they fall to 13-3 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Garnet improve to 11-6 on the season and 7-1 in the Centennial.
After battling through the first 60 minutes without a goal, the game would be decided in extra time. Hopkins had the first opportunity in overtime, but a blocked shot and a Cassandra Conklin save kept the Blue Jays off the board. The Garnet then earned a penalty corner with 1:37 to play and ended up drawing a stroke on the play. Sarah Cooper checked into the game and scored on a shot just inside the right post to win it for the visitors.
Swarthmore finished with an 8-5 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corners. Sophomore
Aubrey Kilgore finished with five saves while Conklin made two for the Garnet.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 30 as the Blue Jays visit the Dickinson Red Devils. The Centennial Conference contest is scheduled for a 3:30 pm start.
Notes: The loss snaps the Blue Jays' 47-game Centennial Conference regular season win streak • It was the longest regular season win streak in conference history.
