Johns Hopkins Bests Marywood, 6-0, in NCAA First Round

BALTIMORE, MD – Five Blue Jays scored to lead the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team to a 6-0 win over Marywood in the NCAA First Round on Wednesday afternoon at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays improve to 18-3 and advance to Saturday's second round game. The Pacers finish their season with a 14-7 mark.

Hopkins wasted little time opening the scoring as Megan Chang collected a rebound off a Lila Slattery shot and slotted it home just 1:44 into the game. Nearly eight minutes later, Grace Waldeck settled a pass from Sophia Albano and then backhanded a shot into the top of the cage to make it 2-0.

The Blue Jays quickly turned that two-goal lead into a four-goal lead late in the second quarter. Liz Falterer scored on a hard shot at the top of the circle off a pass from Jenna Halpin at 26:17. Just 94 seconds later, Slattery fired a shot off the goalie and into the back of the cage.

JHU turned the same trick in the fourth quarter, scoring twice in a span of just 1:41 to go up 6-0. Caeli Robinson ripped a shot from the top off on a penalty corner and Albano tipped it in at the post at the 48:29-mark. Less than two minutes later, Slattery scored directly off an Ava Balacek corner insert to cap the scoring.

Hopkins finished with a 33-1 advantage in shots and a 21-0 advantage in corners. Aubrey Kilgore played the first half and was not forced to make a save. Jessica Lapidus came on in the second and made one save to secure the shutout. Sabrina Frazer and Jenna Keagy split time in the cage for the Pacers and finished with eight saves each. Aliya Heintzelman also made a pair of defensive saves.

Hopkins will take on ninth-ranked Cortland on Saturday, November 16 in Middlebury, VT. The game is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start at Peter Kohn Field.

Notes: Chang's goal is the fastest goal in an NCAA Tournament game in JHU history • The six goals are also the most scored by JHU in a tournament game • Slattery is tied for second in program history with 19 goals this season • Slattery is also tied for third with 46 points • Balacek is now tied for 19th in JHU history with 15 career assists.
