Hopkins Grabs Four Wins at Navy to Improve to 10-1

Blue Jays Run Winning Streak to Seven

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team picked up four wins on Sunday at Navy to run its winning streak to seven and bump its season record to 10-1.  This is the second time in three years the Blue Jays have won 10 of their first 11 matches of the season.

The Blue Jays opened the day with a 25-2 victory over the host Midshipmen and added wins over Haverford (21-6), William & Mary (23-4) and Maryland (25-2).

Against Navy, the Blue Jays swept the Epee (9-0) and Sabre (9-0) bouts while the Foil team went 7-2.  Johns Hopkins got perfect 3-0 efforts in the win from Jorge Gana and Darius Kim in the Epee and Neil Pandey and Alex Jeffords in the Sabre.

Johns Hopkins used a 9-0 victory in the Sabre and an 8-1 win by the Foil team to fuel the 21-6 victory against the Fords.  Jeffords and Sam Roberts both collected three wins, while Leonid Kotov went 2-0 in the Sabre; the 8-1 victory in Foil was fueled by three victories apiece for Matthew Dao and Ethan Insler.

The Blue Jays followed the win against the Fords with the 23-4 victory against the Tribe that saw them sweep the Foil (9-0) and add an 8-1 win in Sabre and a 6-3 decision in the Epee.  The Foil sweep included a perfect 3-0 effort from junior Spencer Grossman Smisek and a pair of wins from Alastair Thompson and Omar Reyes. Kim added three wins in the Epee and Pandey and Kotov both went 3-0 in Sabre.

The Foil team posted its second straight shutout against Maryland (9-0) with Thompson adding three wins, while Reyes and Vir Gogoi each went 2-0.  The Sabre (8-1) team got identical 3-0 efforts from Kotov and graduate student Sam Roberts, while Gana added three wins in a 7-2 win for the Epee team.

Individual highlights on the day included Gana picking up the 200th win of his career, while Dao added the 175th of his career.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Friday, November 17 when the Blue Jays participate in the Columbia Invitational.  That will be the final competition for the Blue Jays before the semester break.
