NEW YORK, NY – Johns Hopkins went 2-1 at the Columbia Invitational on Friday, earning wins over 15
th-ranked NJIT and Stevens, but falling to third-ranked Columbia. The Blue Jays are now 12-2 on the season as they wrap up the Fall portion of its schedule.
Hopkins opened the night with a 19-8 win over NJIT, as the Blue Jays swept the weapons. Junior
Alex Jeffords and sophomore
Leonid Kotov won two bouts each, with Jeffords getting the clinching win, as the Blue Jay Sabre squad won 5-4. Junior
Spencer Grossman Smisek won all three of his bouts to lead the Foil squad to a 7-2 win. Sophomore
Ethan Insler did the same for the Epee squad in a 7-2 win.
JHU then beat Stevens, ranked fifth in Division III, 18-. Graduate student
Sam Roberts went 3-0 and led the Sabre squad to a 7-2 win. The Blue Jays dropped a 5-4 decision in the Foil, while the Epee squad won 7-2. Insler and sophomore
Ayan Bhatnagar won three bouts each in the Epee.
Hopkins wrapped up the day with a 19-8 loss to host and third-ranked Columbia. The Sabre squad fell 5-4 to the Lions, while the Foil squad lost 8-1 and the Epee squad lost 6-3. No Blue Jay picked up more than one win.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, January 17 at the Philadelphia Invitational.
