Records Fall as Johns Hopkins Tops Rowan in Home Opener

BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins broke five pool records en route to a 207-55 win over Rowan in the Blue Jays' home opener.

It didn't take long for the first record to fall – in fact, it took less than two minutes. Aden Li, Jonathan Wang, Avery Clapp and Christian Mayr did the honors in the first event of the night. The quartet posted a time of 1:29.67 to win the 200 Medley Relay. The squad of Dylan Jewett, Julian Maycock, Rad Couture and Adam Sandid finished in third place with a time of 1:33.01.

Josiah March then led the field in the 1000 Free as he grabbed the win in a season-best 9:27.01. Jack Cornish followed in second place with a season-best swim of 9:32.55. The Blue Jays swept the top three spots in the 200 Free, led by Jay Heymann as he clocked in at 1:40.35. Larkin Helman took second in 1:40.74 and Bryce Lloyd placed third in 1:43.04.

Clapp took down the first of his two records on the night as he swept the Backstroke events. He turned in a 48.86 to win the 100 to break the six-year-old record. His time is also a career best and an NCAA B qualifying time. Li finished in second place as he clocked in with a season-best 49.50.

Hopkins earned another one-two-three finish in the 100 Breast, paced by Joe Castagno. He touched in 56.03 to take the win. Maycock finished in 59.17 for second, followed by Nathan Jin in 59.39. The Blue Jays turned the same trick in the 200 Fly. Couture led the way with a swim of 1:50.96 for the win. Jonik Surprenant swam a 1:51.71 to edge out Matthew Hartshorn by just 0.11 seconds.

Mayr then won the 50 Free as he clocked in 21.01 while Wang took second in 21.30. Daniel Byrnes finished in second in the 100 Free as he touched in 47.17. Andrew Gilbert took third in 47.93. Clapp then grabbed his second pool record as he completed his sweep of the Backstroke with a time of 1:46.79. Lloyd finished second in the race and Hartshorn took third.

Castagno made it two straight record-breaking swims as he led a trio of Blue Jays that went one-two-three in the 200 Breast. Castagno touched in 2:00.56, followed closely by Eric Ji in 2:00.90. Both times are better than the pool record of 2:01.01 and both are NCAA B times. Maycock finished in third place with a swim of 2:09.25. March, Cornish and Will Dunlap then went one-two-three in the 500 Free. March took the win with a swim of 4:35.56, followed by Cornish in 4:45.84 and Dunlap in 4:48.28.

Couture led the Blue Jays in the 100 Fly as he finished in 49.94, beating Li by just 0.12 seconds for the win. Surprenant finished in third place in 50.90. Hopkins wrapped up the individual events with another one-two-three finish in the 200 IM. Helman led Hopkins and nearly broke the pool record as he finished in 1:50.53, just 0.11 seconds off the mark. Ji took second in 1:51.51 and Dunlap took third in 1:55.51.

Hopkins ended the night the way it began – with a relay pool record. Clapp, Sandid, Mayr and Heymann finished in 3:02.62 to break the six-year-old record by more than 1.50 seconds. Li, Lloyd, Byrnes and Gilbert took second place in 3:07.89.

JHU is back in action tomorrow afternoon as the Blue Jays travel to Ewing, NJ for a double-dual meet versus host TCNJ and NYU. The meet is scheduled for a 1:00 pm start.
