BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's indoor track & field team opened the season on Saturday by sending athletes to both Navy and Ursinus.
Erika Ezumba broke her own record in the weight throw and
Clarissa Newman broke the freshman record in the pole vault in her collegiate debut.
Navy Indoor Invitational
Ezumba opened the season in dominating fashion, as she crushed her own school record in the weight throw. Her throw of 16.26m was good for third place and bested her own record of 15.13m. Newman placed 11
th overall in the pole vault with her leap of 3.50m, breaking the school freshman record by just one-hundredth of a meter.
Adriana Catalano led a quartet of Blue Jays that finished third through sixth in the 3000m. She ran a personal best of 9:59.14, missing second place by just four-hundredths of a second.
Mackenzie Setton finished in fourth (10:05.75), followed by
Emma Puetz (10:06.09) and
Aisling Callahan (10:06.33).
Emma Kothari and
Diana Valenti went two-three in the mile. The two closed strong, finishing the last 400m in 72 seconds. Kothari crossed the line 5:09.94, followed closely by Valenti in 5:10.72.
Annie Huang took third place in the 1000m, running a blistering 31.69 over the last 200m. She crossed in 2:58.11, just four-hundredths of a second behind Maryland's Kami Joi Hickson.
Sara Bartlett placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 11.44m.
Ursinus Bow Tie Invitational
Hopkins dominated the field in the 5000m as the Blue Jays had nine of the top-10 finishers.
Triya Roy paced the field with a time of 17:33.93 to beat Moravian cross country All-American Tara Smurla.
Sydney Shock, making her collegiate track debut, took third place in 17:46.44.
Cooper Brotherton and
Jamie Stelnik rounded out the top-five and turned in personal bests of 17:48.57 and 18:01.03, respectively.
Hopkins is back in action on Saturday, January 18 at the Catholic Cardinal Invitational.
