HOBOKEN, NJ – The Johns Hopkins men's fencing team won four of its five matches at the MACFA B vs C event at Stevens on Sunday. The Blue Jays are now 26-7 on the season with the 26 wins tied for the second most in program history.
Hopkins opened the day with a shutout win over Hunter. Senior
William Hu won all three of his bouts to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Senior
Anthony Bae and freshman
Yi Peng Sha did the same in the Foil squad's 9-0 win. Senior
Gabe Insler also went 3-0 to lead the Epee squad to a shutout.
The Blue Jays then dropped their lone match of the day, falling 16-11 to the NJIT Highlanders. Hu and senior
Qilin Tong each won two bouts as the Sabre squad lost 5-4. Sophomore
Spencer Grossman Smisek won twice in a 6-3 loss for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, sophomore
Jorge Gana won each of his three bouts in a 5-4 loss.
JHU rebounded with back-to-back shutouts wins over Yeshiva and Army. Against the Macs, sophomore

Leonid Kotov earned three wins each in the Sabre. Sha, Grossman Smisek combined for nine wins for the Foil squad. And Insler and freshman
Ayan Bhatnagar each won three bouts for the Epee squad. Against the Black Knights, Tong, Kotov and Cai combined for all nine wins for the Sabre squad. Baek, Paek and Grossman Smisek did the same in the Foil. Insler and junior
Ethan Kim won three bouts each to lead the Epee squad.
Hopkins closed out the day with a 26-1 win over Navy. Kotov and Cai combined for six wins to lead the Sabre squad to a 9-0 win. Paek, Bae and Grossman Smisek again led the Foil squad to a shutout. Insler won all three of his bouts as the Epee squad won 8-1.
Hopkins returns to action on February 25 at the Temple Invitational.
