CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Johns Hopkins men's swim team returned to action on Friday at both the Cavalier Invitational in Charlottesville, VA and the Tiger Winter Open at nearby Towson University.
The Blue Jays posted four NCAA B times and five career best swims at Virginia in a meet in which JHU is the only Division III team in the eight-team field. JHU also turned an NCAA B time at Towson.
Down in Charlottesville, Hopkins opened the day with third and fourth place finishes in the 200 Free Relay. Freshman

Jay Heymann placed third with a time of 1:22.41. Taking fourth place were senior

Shawn Zhou with a time of 1:24.92. Ide tied his career-best in the lead-off leg with a swim of 21.27.
Graduate student
Ike Shirakata then led a contingent of six Blue Jays in the 200 IM. He finished in 10
th place with a career-best and NCAA B time of 1:49.83. Junior
Joe Castagno took 13
th place with an NCAA B time of 1:50.49. Sophomore
Bryce Lloyd followed in 14
th place as he clocked in at 1:51.22. Freshman
Will Dunlap finished in 16
th with a career-best swim of 1:52.20. Sophomore
Andrew Huang placed 17
th in 1:52.74 and senior
Alex Ren took 21
st in 1:56.24.
Gilbert led the way for Hopkins in the 50 Free as he touched in 20.99 for sixth place. Mayr followed just seven-hundredths of a second later for seventh place. Heymann finished in ninth place in 21.09, beating Couture by only one-hundredth of a second. Sandid finished in 12
th with a time of 21.23, followed by Byrnes in 15
th (21.51) and Zhou in 18
th (22.20).
Hopkins wrapped up the day with second and third place finishes in the 400 Medley Relay. Lloyd, junior
Eric Ji, Couture and Byrnes combined for a time of 3:19.99 for second place. Lloyd led off the relay with a career-best and NCAA B time of 49.42. The team of Ren, juniors
Mitchell List and
Jonik Surprenant and Dunlap finished in 3:27.62 for third. Ren also turned in a career-best swim of 52.12 in the lead-off leg. In addition, Ji posted an NCAA B time in a 200 Breast time trial as he clocked in with a time of 2:00.89.
Meanwhile at Towson, senior
Kellen Roddy posted an NCAA B time as he won the 500 Free with a swim of 4:30.07. Sophomore
Matthew Hartshorn placed third in the 200 IM in 1:54.16 and senior
Justin Limberg placed fifth in 1:56.15. In the 50 Free, sophomore
Avery Clapp placed sixth with a time of 21.38 and graduate student
Brandon Stride placed 12
th in 22.56.
Hopkins returns to action at both invitationals on Saturday, February 10. The Cavalier Invitational kicks off with the prelims at 11:00 am while the Tiger Winter Open begins at 10:00 am.
