Johns Hopkins Upends Sixth-Ranked Emory in ITA National Indoor Quarterfinals

NICHOLASVILLE, KY – The eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team topped sixth-ranked Emory, 4-3, in the ITA National Indoor Quarterfinals Friday morning. The Blue Jays improve to 7-1 overall while the Eagles fall to 2-2.
 
Hopkins won two of the three doubles matches to grab the doubles' point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Sophomore Jay Xiao and freshman Samantha Wang won the match of the day as the duo beat Izzy Antanavicius and Yanire Marte, 6-2, at three doubles. The Eagles answered with a 6-3 win at one doubles, as fifth-ranked Emily Kantrovitz and Ana Cristina-Perez beat graduate student Ashley Chang and freshman Sophia Kim. The Blue Jays grabbed the doubles' point when sophomore Kamila Wong and freshman Sydney Langer beat Iris Berman and Eliza McPherron, 6-3, at two.
 
Antanavicius picked up the first point of singles to tie the match at one. She beat Kim 6-2, 6-2 at number four singles. Chang answered with a 6-2, 6-2 win over seventh-ranked Perez at number two to put the Blue Jays back up 2-1. Wang then beat Berman 6-4, 6-2 at number five to push Hopkins' lead to 3-1.
 
Emory battled back with wins at one and six to tie the match at three. Kantrovitz, ranked sixth nationally, edged graduate student Mary Beth Hurley 6-2, 6-7 (5), 6-3, at one to pull the Eagles within one. Yanire then tied the match with a close 7-5, 7-6 (6) win over Wong at six. The match and a spot in Saturday's semifinals came down to the number three spot. Langer took the first set, 6-0, but Ilayda Baykan won the second set, 7-5, to force a third. Baykan won the first game, but Langer rolled off four straight wins to go up 4-1. Baykan won the sixth game to make it 4-2, but Langer won the final two games to take the set and the match, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.  
 
The win was Hopkins' first-ever over Emory, snapping a five-match losing streak to the eight-time NCAA champions. JHU is now 12-9 all-time at the ITA National Indoor Championship and will play in the semifinals for the fifth time in eight appearances. Hopkins will now face top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
