PASADENA, CA – Host and 25
th-ranked Caltech edged 15
th-ranked Johns Hopkins in a tightly-contested non-conference match Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays fall to 4-3 overall while the Beavers improve to 4-4.
The Beavers grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles and then held on with three singles wins to take the match. Tejas Ram and Andrei Staicu won a tight 8-7 (2) match at number two over
Pranav Gadiraju and
Joshua Kim. The Blue Jays answered with an 8-6 win at one as
Daniel Ardila and
Marco Azar topped Kyle McCandless and Daniel Wen. Eric He and Aditya Srinivasan retook the lead with an 8-7 (5) win over
Hanyu Liu and
Allen Gong at three.
Azar tied the match at 2-2 as he took the first singles point 6-1, 7-6 (3) versus Ram at number six. Kim then put the Blue Jays on top with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Staicu at five. Wen responded with a 6-3, 7-5 win over
Chakor Rajendra at three to make it a 3-3 match.
The match came down to one, two and four singles – all of which went to three sets. Constantin Cedillo put the Beavers back on top with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win over Ardila at two. Liu answered with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win over He at four and the teams were tied at four. McCandless secured the win for Caltech when he won 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 at one over Gong.
Hopkins closes out its Spring Break trip on Sunday, March 24 at 33
rd-ranked George Fox. The match is scheduled for a 10:00 am start in Claremont, CA.
