BALTIMORE, MD – Six members of the Johns Hopkins men's fencing team have been named to the USFCA All-America team it was announced this week. Junior
Alan Zheng and sophomores
Matthew Dao and
Jorge Gana were named to the first team, while senior
William Hu, sophomore
Alex Jeffords and freshman
Ayan Bhatnagar were named to the second team.
The USFCA recognizes the top Division III fencers in the country with All-America awards. The recipients are determined by an evaluation of their regular season and postseason performance, including both the NCAA Regionals and NCAA Championships. Hopkins has now produced 16 All-Americans since the USFCA began naming a Division III team in 2021.
Zheng becomes the first three-time All-American in program history. He finished the season with team-best 90 wins and placed 14
th at the NCAA Championships. Zheng's 90 Foil wins are tied for the eighth most in program history and he currently ranks sixth with 261 career Foil wins.
Dao earns All-America honors for the second time in his career after garnering second team honors last year. He went 73-42 this season in the Epee and finished second at the MAFCA Championships and 16
th at the NCAA Regional. Dao's 73 wins were second most on the team in the Epee. With just two years under his belt, he ranks 14
th in JHU history with 168 career wins.
Gana repeats as a First Team All-American after going 85-43 this season. He led the Epee squad in wins and ranked second overall on the team. He won the MACFA Epee title this season and went on to finish seventh at the regional and 23
rd at the NCAA Championships. Gana is tied for 11
th in school history with 180 career wins in the Epee.
Hu earns Second Team All-America honors for the second straight year. He finished the season with an 83-37 record and led the Sabre squad in wins. Hu won the MACFA Sabre title and went on to finish seventh at the NCAA Regional. He ranks eighth in school history with 231 career wins in the Sabre.
Jeffords garners All-America honors for the second time after being named honorable mention last year. He finished with the season with an 80-35 record and ranked second on the Sabre squad in wins. Jeffords opened the season with a second-place finish at the Franke Classic (formerly the Temple Open), and went onto place sixth at the MACFA Championship and 13
th at the regional.
Bhatnagar went 62-38 in his freshman campaign and capped off the year with a tie for 17th at the NCAA regional Championship. His 62 wins are the seventh most by a freshman Epeeist in school history.
