ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's track and field team traveled in state to open its season at the Navy Outdoor Invitational Saturday afternoon, winning a number of events in a strong start to competition.
Saturday's meet began with the hammer throw and a pair of top-five finishes for the Blue Jays.
Erika Ezumba picked up where she left off after a strong indoor season, finishing second with a mark of 41.68 meters, with
Kelsey Neff finishing fifth with her throw of 34.33 meters.
Victoria Kadiri finished second in the long jump followed by Bartlett in fifth, with the junior going on to win Hopkins' first event of the season in the triple jump. An All-American during the indoor season, Bartlett took first with a mark of 11.65 meters with
Chloe Zhang coming in just behind her in second with a leap of 10.01 meters.
Other top five finishes in Saturday's field events included
Cassidy Brown in the pole vault (5
th - 3.20 meters),
Abigail Lovelace in the high jump (3
rd – 1.55 meters) and Ezumba (2
nd – 12.29), Neff (3
rd - 12.24 meters) and
Hilary Gallito (5
th – 10.80 meters) in the shot put.
Saturday's track events kicked off with the 3000-meter steeplechase in which
Cooper Brotherton took home first with a time of 11:32.14. Coming in just behind the sophomore were
Eleni Alvarez (2
nd – 11:38.81) and
Cameron Coletti (4
th – 12:15.66).
In the 1500 it was
Mackenzie Setton taking the top spot with a time of 4:38.84, with
Adriana Catalano and
Callie Jones also finishing in the top five before Hopkins continued its dominance of Saturday's distance events in the 5000.
Amelia Giles took home first in the event with a time of 18:30.35 with
Natalie Boquist finishing just behind in second with a time of 18:47.03.
The sprints began with the 100-meter hurdles in which Kadiri took first with a time of 14.81 before
Annie Huang continued the trend with a first-place finish in the 800 after crossing the line in 2:11.64. Zhang finished fourth in the 100 and
Anna Zaeske took fifth in the 200 to conclude the day's individual events before the day concluded with relays.
Zhang, Zaeske,
Lianne Saussy and
Emily Chen combined to finish third in the 4x100, with the Blue Jays securing their final first-place finish of the day in the 4x400 in which Zaeske, Huang, Saussy and
Monal Daterao took home first with a time of 3:55.81.
Next up for the Blue Jays is the Dalton Ebanks Invitational Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6.
