BALTIMORE, MD -- After winning two-of-three doubles matches, the 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins women's tennis team swept all six singles matches to fuel an 8-1 Centennial Conference victory over 23rd-ranked Swarthmore Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 9-4 overall and 3-0 in the Centennial with the win, while the Garnet slip to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in the Centennial.
The Blue Jays were up 2-1 after doubles after grabbing wins at first and third with a tie-breaker loss at two. Hopkins' got an 8-2 win at number three from
Ashley Chang and
Lia Melvin and the top team of
Sophia Kim and
Jay Xiao were off next after scoring an 8-4 win at number one. A tightly-contested match at second doubles went to the Garnet as Lola Diaz and Erica Stutz took an 8-7 (6) victory for Swarthmore.
Johns Hopkins would win all six singles matches in straight sets with Chang starting the run with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Oviya Kumaran at three. Xiao (6-1, 6-3), Kim (6-3, 6-2) and
Samantha Wang (6-0, 6-3) quickly followed with wins at fourth, second and sixth, respectively, to seal the win for the Blue Jays.
Johns Hopkins' victories at first and fifth singles required tie-breaker wins in one of the sets for
Mary Beth Hurley at first and
Sydney Langer at fifth. Hurley grabbed a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win over Diaz and Langer topped Ella Strickler 6-1, 7-6 (4) to close out the victory.

Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, April 9 as the Blue Jays travel to Dickinson to take on the Red Devils (4 pm) in another Centennial Conference match.
