FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins fell to 35
th-ranked Carnegie Mellon, 6-3, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at Mary Washington. The Blue Jays fall to 5-5 on the season while the Tartans improve to 6-7.
Carnegie Mellon swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles. Derek Wong and Nadim Motaghedi took the first point with an 8-3 win over
Pranav Gadiraju and
George Jiang at number two. Raghav Jangbahadur and Daniel Kong then beat
Daniel Ardila and
Marco Azar, 8-5, at one. Nicholas Wernick and Theodore Gershon put the Tartans up 3-0 with an 8-3 win over
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra at three.
Hanyu Liu opened singles with a quick 6-0, 6-0 win over Wernick at number four to make it 3-1. Azar then cut the deficit to one when he beat Jonathan Gu 6-3, 6-2 at five. Jangbahadur answered with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gong at one to put CMU up 4-2. Chaitanuya Irkar then clinched the win for the Tartans when he beat Gadiraju 7-5, 6-3 at six. Rajendra picked up another point for the Blue Jays with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (12) win at three versus Motaghedi. Kong wrapped up the match with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 win at two over Ardila.
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 10 at Washington College. The Centennial Conference contest is slated for a 4:00 pm start.
