Johns Hopkins Rallies to Stun Mary Washington, 5-4

CLEVELAND, OH – Johns Hopkins rallied to stun Mary Washington, 5-4, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon. The 15th-ranked Blue Jays trailed 4-2 but won the final three matches to beat the 17th-ranked Eagles. Hopkins improves to 15-6 on the season while Mary Washington finishes at 17-8.
 
The Eagles led 2-0, 3-1 and 4-2 before the Blue Jays rallied for the win. Rishi Charan Shankar and Peter Leese, ranked 13th in the nation, put UMW up 1-0 with an 8-5 win at number one doubles over Pranav Gadiraju and Allen Gong. Andrew Cooper and Artis Hart then beat Hanyu Liu and Chakor Rajendra, 8-6, at three to make it 2-0. Daniel Ardila and Marco Azar prevented the doubles' sweep with an 8-6 win over Evan Fisher and Trevor Rein.
 
Shankar won by retirement over Ardila at number one singles and the Eagles' lead was 3-1. Liu quickly answered for the Blue Jays with a 6-0, 6-1 win at three over Hart. Fisher gave UMW back a two-point lead when he won a close one 6-4, 6-4 at six over Gadiraju.
 
Gong sparked the comeback when he defeated Rein 6-4, 7-5 at number four. Rajendra then rallied after losing the first set 6-1 to beat Brock Ladehoff 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 at two to knot the match at four. All eyes turned to court five and the match between Leese and Azar. Leese took the first set 6-0, but Azar answered with a 6-4 win the second. Leese then jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the third and deciding set. Azar wasn't going away however, as he won five straight games to take the win and punch the Blue Jays' ticket into the NCAA Sweet 16.
 
Hopkins will take on host and third-ranked Case Western in the NCAA Sweet 16 on Sunday, May 12 at 12:00 pm.
 
Notes: Azar is now tied for 23rd in JHU history with 38 career singles wins, while Liu is now tied for 25th with 36 wins • Ardila moved into a tie for 12th with 56 career doubles wins and Marco is now tied for 25th with 45.
