ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Johns Hopkins women's tennis team took on 12
th-ranked Washington & Lee in the Third Round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday afternoon, sweeping the Generals 5-0 to secure its spot in the Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season and sixth time in program history. The victory moves the Blue Jays to 20-4, marking the fourth time they have reached 20 wins in a single season in program history, while the loss drops Washington & Lee to 21-2.
Ashley Chang and
Lia Melvin stayed perfect at third doubles, making quick work of the Generals' Izzy Koziol and Haley Stoltz with an 8-1 win to put Hopkins up 1-0 early. In more tightly contested matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles,
Sophia Kim and
Jay Xiao earned an 8-5 victory at the top flight before
Sydney Langer and
Kamila Wong completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at Court 2 to make it 3-0 Blue Jays.
After the first meeting between the sides back in February came down to the final singles bout before the Blue Jays ultimately fell 5-4, Hopkins left nothing to chance in the rematch, winning the first two singles matches of the day in dominant fashion to clinch the 5-0 win and punch its ticket to the Quarterfinals.
Langer was the first to finish at fourth singles, besting Annie Jennings 6-0, 6-1 for her 14
th win of the season before Wong mirrored the freshman's score at Court 5 to secure the team victory in sweeping fashion. The Blue Jays were competitive in the remaining four matches that went unfinished, with Melvin and Chang both holding one-set leads while
Mary Beth Hurley and Kim were both ahead in Set 2 after dropping their first sets.
Next up for Hopkins is a trip to St. Louis, Mo. for the Quarterfinals where they will take on third-ranked and reigning NCAA Tournament Runner-Up UChicago Monday, May 20. Timing of opening serve is to be determined.
