ST. LOUIS, MO – Johns Hopkins' NCAA Tournament run ended in the quarterfinals to third-ranked Chicago, 5-0, Monday afternoon. The Blue Jays end their season at 20-5 while the Maroons improve to 21-1 and advance to Tuesday's national semifinal.
Chicago jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the Maroons swept the doubles' matches. Sarena Biria and Lauren Khou put Chicago up early with an 8-1 win at number three doubles over
Ashley Chang and
Lia Melvin. Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo then beat
Sydney Langer and
Kamila Wong, 8-1, at two. Rena Lin and Oliwia Mikos completed the sweep when they beat
Sophia Kim and
Jay Xiao, 8-2, at one.
Lin then grabbed the first singles' point and pushed the Maroons closer to the semifinals. She earned a 6-3, 6-3 win over
Mary Beth Hurley at number one singles. Guo clinched the victory for Chicago when she survived a three-setter at number five. She took the first set 6-1 over Langer, who answered with a 6-2 win in the second. Guo took the match with a 6-1 win in the third set.
Chang was close to victory at number three singles as she was up a set and up 5-1 in the second over Nika Vesely. Kim was down a set at two and was tied 5-5 in the second versus Sylwia Mikos. At four, Xiao had dropped a close 6-4 decision in the first set but bounced back with a 6-4 win in the second to force a third and deciding set. And at number six, Biria was up a set (6-3) over Wang and led 6-5 in the second.
The season will continue for Hurley and Kim, who were selected to the NCAA Singles Championship. The individual championships are scheduled for May 25-27.
