Mary Beth Hurley capped her career with All-America honors in singles at the NCAA Championships on Saturday. Hurley advanced to the round of the 16 at the championships and freshman
Sophia Kim lost in the round of 32.
Hurley opened the day with a come-from-behind win in the round of 32. She dropped the first set to Deliala Friedman, ranked 16
th in the nation, 7-5. Hurley rallied with a 7-6 (4) win in the second and then a 6-3 win in the third and deciding set. The win earned her All-America honors, the first of her career. Hurley then squared off against 19
th-ranked Alisha Chulani, who had just upset the number four seed in straight sets. Hurley took the first set, 6-2, but Chulani answered with a 6-0 win in the second and 6-4 win in the third to grab a spot in the quarterfinals.
Kim faced off against fifth-seeded Sylwia Mikos in the round of 32. The two met just five days earlier in the team quarterfinals and Mikos went on to help her team to the 2024 NCAA Championship. Mikos pulled out a 7-6 (2) win in the first set and Kim answered with a 6-3 win in the second. Mikos then took the third set by a 6-3 score to advance to the round of 16.
Hurley is the first Blue Jay since 2021 to win a match at the NCAA Singles Championship. In addition, she is just different Blue Jay in program history to do so. She finishes her career with a 70-51 record in singles, including 26-13 at Johns Hopkins. In total, Hurley went a combined 123-79 (singles and doubles) in her career. Kim finishes her freshman campaign with a 13-5 record in singles.
