BALTIMORE, MD - The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got a pair of fourth quarter goals to break open a tie game as the Blue Jays beat the 20
th-ranked Shenandoah Hornets, 3-1, Friday night. The Blue Jays open the season with a win for the 12
th straight season.

Lila Slattery scored the first goal of the season just 3:40 into the game to put the Blue Jays on top. Senior
Liz Falterer lifted the ball 40 yards over the defense to Slattery, who then carried into the circle and slotted home her first goal for the Blue Jays.

The Hornets answered with 2:20 to play in the second quarter, as they capitalized on a penalty corner. Camryn DeLeva took a hit from the top of the circle, that was deflected by Mairead McKibbin in the middle of the circle. Cassidy Morrison then tipped the ball in at the right post to knot the score at one.

After a scoreless third quarter, Hopkins scored twice in a span of only two minutes and 18 seconds to push out to a 3-1 lead. JHU cashed in on an
Ava Balacek penalty corner at the 49:08-mark to retake the lead. Balacek inserted the corner to sophomore
Caeli Robinson, who blasted a shot through the defense and into the cage for the go-ahead goal. Just a short time later, senior
Emily Amsden converted a penalty stroke to put the Blue Jays on top 3-1.

Hopkins outshot Shenandoah, 16-4, and had an 11-5 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore
Aubrey Kilgore earned her first career win with a pair of saves. Taylor Swann finished with seven saves in the loss for the Hornets.

Hopkins hits the road on Sunday, September 1 at Washington & Lee. The non-conference contest is slated for a 12:00 pm start.
