BALTIMORE, MD – Second-ranked Johns Hopkins scored twice in the first and fourth quarters to beat 14
th-ranked TCNJ Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 5-1 on the season while the Lions fall to 3-2.
Hopkins scored twice in a two-minute span late in the first half to grab the lead. The Blue Jays got on the board thanks to a penalty corner at 12:54 in the first. Senior
Jenna Halpin received the corner and passed it right back to classmate
Ava Balacek. She then passed the ball across the circle to a wide-open
Sophie Gomez, who fired a shot to the left post for her first goal of the season.
Just two minutes and five seconds later, the Blue Jays' lead was two. With the clock winding down, junior
Grace Waldeck dribbled into the top right side of the circle and back-handed a shot inside the near post. After a scoreless second and third quarters, Hopkins scored twice in just over four minutes in the fourth to push out to the 4-0 lead.
Off a Blue Jay corner, Halpin passed the ball down to Balacek but a defender poked the ball away. The ball came right back to Balacek and she slotted it home at 48:20. A little over four minutes later, senior
Emily Amsden beat Lions' goalie Brigitte Racey to the right post on a penalty stroke.
Sophomore
Aubrey Kilgore tied her career high with five saves to earn the shutout. Racey totaled 11 saves in the loss for the Lions. Hopkins outshot TCNJ, 22-6, and had a 10-3 advantage in shots.
Hopkins returns to action on Tuesday, September 17 as the Blue Jays host the ninth-ranked York Spartans. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 6:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
Notes: This was the first meeting between Hopkins and TCNJ since 2014 • The Blue Jays beat the Lions for just the second time ever as they are now 2-16 all-time in the series.
