Comeback Falls Short as York Tops Johns Hopkins in Overtime

BALTIMORE, MD – Ninth-ranked York scored 2:11 into the second overtime to beat host and third-ranked Johns Hopkins, 3-2, in non-conference action Tuesday night. The Blue Jays slip to 5-2 on the season while the Spartans improve to 5-1.

After a scoreless first half that saw Hopkins outshoot York, 6-0, it was the Spartans that got on the board first. York scored twice in less than eight minutes to grab a 2-0 lead. Claire Burrows put the visitors on the board when she bounced on a rebound off a long hit from Riley Buschert just 61 seconds into the third quarter. The Spartans then capitalized on a penalty corner at 38:56. Sam Ward inserted the corner to Libby Wild at the top of the circle and she scored on a low hard shot to stake York to a two-goal lead.

Hopkins wasn't going away however as the Blue Jays scored twice in the fourth quarter to knot the score and eventually force overtime. Senior Emily Amsden inserted a penalty corner to classmate Sophie Gomez on the near side of the circle. She settled the pass and then blasted a shot inside the near post at 42:18. The Blue Jays then knotted the score on freshman Kaitlin Coward's first career goal. Sophomore Caeli Robinson took a hit from the top of the circle and the ball snuck threw to Coward on the back post, who chipped into the cage with just over nine minutes to play in the game.

The Blue Jays continued to pressure the cage, getting four more shots off but could not get the winner. The teams battled through a scoreless first overtime and then early in the second York earned a corner. Buschert inserted the corner to Olivia Miller at the top of the circle and she ripped a shot inside the post to win it for the Spartans.

Hopkins outshot York 20-5 and had an 11-5 advantage in corners. Sophomore Aubrey Kilgore finished with one save while Belle Fields made five for the Spartans.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, September 25 as the Blue Jays open Centennial Conference play against McDaniel. The game is slated for a 4:00 pm start at Homewood Field.
