BALTIMORE, MD – Fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins scored at least one goal in each quarter as the Blue Jays beat visiting McDaniel Wednesday in both teams' Centennial Conference opener. The Blue Jays improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while the Green Terror fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the CC.
Hopkins jumped on McDaniel early as senior
Emily Amsden scored the first of her three goals just 66 seconds in on a tip at the post. She doubled the Blue Jays' lead at the 8:53-mark when she took the ball off a defender's stick and scored from seven yards out. Just 1:03 into the second quarter, senior
Emma Rose redirected a shot from graduate student
Lila Slattery at the left post.
Five and half minutes after Rose's score, Amsden completed her hat trick with a redirect off a
Sophia Albano back-hand. Freshman
Julia Widen scored her first career goal with 31 seconds left in the half to put Hopkins up 5-0 at the break.
Rose tallied her second goal of the afternoon just 4:02 into the third quarter with a rebound off a Teaghan Rieder save. Less than four minutes later, senior
Sophie Gomez scored off a give-and-go with classmate
Jenna Halpin and the lead was 7-0. Albano collected a deflection in the circle and slotted a shot past Rieder to the back post to make it an eight-goal game at 41:10. Just three minutes later, junior
Megan Chang got her own rebound and put it home on the doorstep. Senior
Ava Balacek closed out the scoring with 1:19 to play when she scored off a rebound on another Rieder save.
Hopkins outshot McDaniel, 36-0, and had a 26-0 advantage in corners. Sophomore
Aubrey Kilgore and freshman
Jessica Lapidus each played two quarters in the cage for the Blue Jays. Rieder finished with 10 saves for the Green Terror, which also had four defensive saves from Tori McArthur, Justin Washburn and Amy Richenderfer.
Notes: The 10 goals are the most by Hopkins since a 12-0 win over Notre Dame (MD) on October 3, 2016 • Amsden's hat trick is the first of her career and is the first by a Blue Jay since September 28, 2022.
