ANNAPOLIS, MD – Members of the Johns Hopkins men's tennis team took on opponents from a quartet of Division I schools at Navy's annual Joe Hunt Invitational this past weekend. Freshman
Mukundh Boopathi led the Blue Jays by going a combined 7-0 over the three-day event. Graduate student
Daniel Ardila reached a milestone as he earned his 100
th career win.
Boopathi won all four of his singles matches in straight sets. He opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Tommy Kim (Navy) and then beat Evgenios Vasilakis (PC) 6-3, 6-1. He won 6-4, 6-1 over George Cutone (Navy) and wrapped up singles' play with a 6-2 6-2 win over Bertin Karenzi (MSU). In doubles, Boopathi paired with junior
Pranav Gadiraju to go 3-0. The duo won a tight 7-6 (7) match over Steve Nguyen and Kim and then another close 7-5 decision versus Jaeden Patterson and Jacob Poole (MSU). Boopathi and Gadiraju closed out doubles with a 6-2 win over Jonathan Lee and Marco Foglieni (PC). Gadiraju went 1-1 in singles in addition to his 3-0 mark in doubles with Boopathi. He lost his first match 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-1 to McRae but then won 6-1, 6-0 over Zach Giertz (Navy).
Sophomore
Chakor Rajendra and freshman
Jason Li each went 5-1 over singles and doubles. Rajendra won his first match 6-3, 6-1over Vladisav Gorbatenko (NSU). He then lost in three sets to Kim 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3. He then rebounded with a 7-5, 6-0 defeat of Niles Rachal (MSU). Rajendra and Li paired to go 3-0 in doubles. The duo won 6-2 over Frederick McRae and Gorbatenko and then beat Anthony Parris and Antonio Santos (MSU) 6-4. They then defeated Alessio Guarino and Luke Papayoanou (MSM) 6-2. Li dropped his first singles match 6-0, 6-3 to Jakub Solarski (NSU). He bounced back with a pair of straight set wins, losing a total of just three games, over Charlie Spencer (Navy) and Patterson.
Freshman
Brian Yi and
Andy Zhu each went 4-2 over the weekend. Yi won all three of singles matches in straight sets and lost just five games total. He opened with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Deniz Okyay (NSU). He then beat Jonathan Lee (Navy) and Ameer Muhammad (MSU) by a 6-1, 6-0 score. Yi then went 1-2 in doubles partnered with junior
Allen Gong. The pair lost a pair of tight 7-6 (5) matches to teams from Navy and Norfolk State but closed out doubles with a 7-5 win over Makkijah Brown and Karenzi. Zhu played doubles with freshman
Owen Akers the duo went 2-1. In their first match, they beat Kai Edwards and Giertz 7-5, but then lost to Daksh Prasad and Vasilakis 6-2. Zhu and Akers wrapped up doubles with a 6-2 win over Tezas Singh Parmar and Muhammad. Akers also went 1-2 in singles, picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win over Parmar in his final singles' match.
Ardila went 3-2 over the weekend, going 1-1 in singles and 2-1 in doubles. Both singles' matches went three sets and he picked up a win over David Mamalat (PC) 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. He paired with freshman
Dylan Blenkiron in doubles for a 6-3 win over Pedro Cardoso and Mamalat and a 6-2 victory over Mikeal Carpenter and Rachal. Ardila picked up his 100
th career win with his second victory of the day. He is the 17
th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Hopkins wraps up the Fall portion of its schedule with the ITA Southeast Regional Championship September 27-28.
