Johns Hopkins Wins Three on Day Two of Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Johns Hopkins ended the weekend with three straight wins, including two over ranked opponents, at the Philadelphia Invitational. The Blue Jays are now 15-7 on the season.
 
Hopkins opened the day against sixth-ranked Ohio State with the Buckeyes taking an 18-9 win. Sam Roberts earned the Blue Jays' lone win in an 8-1 loss for the Sabre squad. The Foil squad grabbed a 6-3 win, fueled by two wins each from Alan Zheng, Alastair Thompson and Spencer Grossman Smisek. In the Epee, Jorge Gana and Matthew Dao won one bout each in a 7-2 loss.
 
Hopkins then lost a close one to 10th-ranked Duke, 15-12. The Sabre squad grabbed a 5-4 win, behind two wins for Alex Jeffords and Alex Pan. Zheng won two of his three bouts, but the Foil squad lost a close 5-4 decision. In the Epee, Ethan Insler won two of his three, but the Jays lost 5-4.
 
The Blue Jays got back in the win column as they upset the 15th-ranked NJIT Highlanders, 14-13. Pan went 3-0 and clinched a 5-4 win in the Sabre for JHU. Omar Reyes also went 3-0 to lead the Foil squad to a 6-3 win. Insler led the Epee squad with two wins in a 6-3 loss.
 
JHU followed that with a 16-11 win over NYU, ranked number one in Division III. Neil Pandey won each of his three bouts and led the Sabre squad to a 6-3 victory. Zheng went 2-1 in a 5-4 loss for the Foil squad. In the Epee, Dao, Gana and Insler won twice each for a 6-3 win.
 
Hopkins wrapped up the weekend with a 22-5 win over Haverford. Roberts, Pandey and Pan combined for a 9-0 win in the Sabre. Reyes and Thompson won two bouts apiece, with Thompson clinching a 5-4 win in the Foil. Gana and Insler each went 3-0 to lead the Epee squad to an 8-1 win.
 
Hopkins returns to action in two weeks at the Blue Jay Invitational on Sunday, February 2.
 
Notes: Head coach Austin Young is now three wins shy of 400 for his career • Zheng needs 10 wins to reach 300 for his career.
