Tran's Strike Lifts Second-Ranked Hopkins Past Washington College, 1-0

Blue Jays Win 13th Straight

BALTIMORE, MD – The second-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got a goal in the final seconds of the first quarter and the Blue Jays made that one strike stand up as the Blue Jays topped visiting Washington College, 1-0, in Centennial Conference field hockey action at Homewood Field Wednesday afternoon.  The Blue Jays run their winning streak to 13 and push their record to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the Centennial Conference with the victory, while the Shorewomen slip to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the Centnenial.

The Blue Jays controlled play in the first quarter as they outshot the Shorewomen 7-0 and collected seven penalty corners in the opening 15 minutes before cashing in the last of those seven.  Playing off the insert of Kaitlin Coward, sophomore Ada Farmer took the feed at the top of the circle and drove right before sending a bouncing cross through the box to the back post, where classmate An Tran tipped it into the open cage to open the scoring.
The field remained tilted in the Blue Jays' favor in the second quarter as they collected six of the eight shots and five of the six corners in the period, but they couldn't solve Washington College goalie Charlotte Schuman again.  Schuman collected three second-quarter saves to account for the one-goal Blue Jay lead holding through halftime.

The Shorewomen pushed forward in the third quarter and fired four of their eight shots in the game in the period, but Blue Jay goalie Aubrey Kilgore was equal to all four offerings to keep it a one-goal game entering the final period.

The Blue Jays had several golden chances to grab an insurance goal in the final 15 minutes, but Schuman was kicked aside four Johns Hopkins shots, including a solid strike from Grace Nockolds with just under 12 minutes to play and back-to-back offerings from Grace Waldeck and Jenna Halpin midway through the period.  For her part, Kilgore stuffed Emma Campbell from in tight with 8:40 on the fourth-quarter clock to turn away Washington College's best chance in the final 15 minutes; Campbell's rebound off Kilgore's save drifted wide of the post.

Johns Hopkins held a 22-8 advantage in shots and held a 14-2 advantage in corners.  Schuman posted 10 saves in goal for the Shorewomen, while Kilgore (5) and Jessica Lapidus (1) combined for six stops.  The Shorewomen also got a big defensive save from Ashley Swan in the second quarter with the Blue Jays pressing for a second goal

Today's win is the 299th in the career of Johns Hopkins head coach Jane Wells, who ranks 10th among active Division III coaches in victories.

Johns Hopkins will return to action on Saturday, October 25 when the Blue Jays travel to Haverford for a key Centennial Conference game against the Fords.
