PHILADELPHIA, PA – In his collegiate debut,
Jamie Knox led Johns Hopkins with a fifth-place finish in the Epee at the Coach Nikki Franke Classic Sunday. In addition, three Blue Jays placed in the top-15 and five placed in the top-20.
Knox posted a 9-4 record on the day and advanced to the quarterfinals to finish in fifth place out of 84 fencers. This is the third time in the last four years that a Blue Jay freshman has placed in the top-five in the Epee at the Franke Classic.
Jorge Gana finished in a tie for 11
th in the Epee, going 8-3 on the day. He moves into second in Johns Hopkins history in career Epee wins (274) with his eight wins.
Darius Kim went 7-4 and finished in 25
th, while
Leo He placed 37
th (4-5) and
Ethan Insler finished in 52
nd (4-6).
Josh Sima led the Blue Jays Foilists with a 13
th place finish out of 80 fencers. He advanced to the round of 16 and finished with a 6-5 record. His finish is the best by a Blue Jay in the Foil since 2017.
Alastair Thompson also advanced to the round of 16 and finished in 16
th place with a 3-8 record.
Yi Peng Sha posted a 6-4 record and finished in 22
nd place.
Omar Reyes placed 30
th (5-5),
Spencer Grossman Smisek placed 44
th (5-4) and
Vir Gogoi finished in a tie for 55
th (2-7). Grossman Smisek moved into seventh place in JHU history for career Foil wins with 248.
Noah Zeng led a trio of Blue Jays in the Sabre with a 19
th place finish. He advanced to the round of 32 and finished the day with a 9-3 record.
Larry Cai finished in 36
th place with a 6-5 record, while
Alex Plan placed 40
th with a 6-5 mark.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, November 2 at the Drew Invitational.
