Schlegel, Mendelsohn Earn Top Honors, Six Earn Delfina All-MPSF East Honors

Blue Jays Produce Coach, Newcomer of the Year

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – Johns Hopkins head coach Max Schlegel earned Coach of the Year, freshman attacker Luke Mendelsohn was named the Newcomer of the Year and six Blue Jays were named to the 2025 Delfina All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) East Water Polo Team it was announced today.  Johns Hopkins' six selections to the All-MSPF East Team were the most of any team in the league.
 
In the Blue Jays' first season in the conference, Schlegel guided Johns Hopkins to a perfect 8-0 record in league play and a 20-5 overall record.  Johns Hopkins has been ranked as high as second in the nation in the CWPA Division III Poll this season and the 20 wins the Blue Jays have accumulated are the most for the team since 2015 and are just five shy of the program record of 25 in 2012.
 
Mendelsohn has made an immediate impact in his first year at Homewood and was recognized with the MPSF East Newcomer of the Year award while also earning a spot on the First Team All-MPSF East Team as well.  He counts 50 goals and 36 assists for 86 points to his credit and also leads the MPSF with 51 steals.  His 86 points rank fourth in school history by a freshman, while his 50 goals rank 10th.  He has registered at least one goal in 22 of 25 games this season and has posted at least two points in 22 of 25 games as well.
 
Joining Mendelsohn on the first team were teammates Mason Hofmann (attacker) and sophomore Phillip Long (center-defender), while junior Alec Baker (attacker) grabbed second team honors.  Rounding out the Blue Jays named to the team were sophomore center Andrew Lee and graduate student goalie Kyle Pearson, who both earned honorable mention status.
 
Hofmann, who joined Mendelsohn as the only two freshmen to earn a spot on the first team, leads the team in goals (62) and points (90) and ranks second in assists.  Hofmann's 62 goals rank as the second-highest single-season total in program history by a freshman, while his 90 points rank third.  Hofmann has registered 14 multi-goal games this season, has 14 games with three or more points and counts 28 steals to his credit as well.
 
Long enters this week's MPSF Championships with 42 goals and 24 assists for 66 points on the year.  He has 12 multi-goal and 18 multi-point games on the year and has been especially effective down the stretch with 18 goals and nine assists in his last eight games.
 
Baker has been an exceptional facilitator for the Blue Jays this season as he leads the squad with 45 assists and added 17 goals to account for 62 points on the year.  He has 13 multi-assist games this season and ranks second on the team in steals (36) through 25 games.
 
In two seasons, Lee has proven to be one of the Blue Jays' most consistent finishers as he has 44 goals and six assists for 50 points thus far.  He ranks second on the team in shooting percentage (.611) among players who have taken 50 or more shots and leads the team with 57 drawn ejections.
 
Pearson has played just under 300 minutes (299:30) in 11 games this season and he sports a 12.29 goals against average and a .493 save percentage.  He has played in 92 games in his career and enters this week's MPSF Championships with 886 saves to his credit; he is just 17 saves shy of breaking John Wilson's Johns Hopkins' career record of 902.
 
Johns Hopkins earned the number five seed in this week's MPSF Championships at Stanford.  The Blue Jays will open the tournament against fifth-seeded Cal at 2:30 pm (PT) on Friday, November 21.
