BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team earned 437 points to grab third place in the team standings after the first day of Loyola University Maryland's H2ounds Invitational on Friday. Host Loyola rang up 1,059 points and sits firmly in the lead with Colgate totaling 476 points to grab a narrow edge over the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins is the only non-Division I program among the five competing teams.
The Johns Hopkins 200 Medley Relay team of Aiden Lin,
Jonathan Wang,
Avery Clapp and
Michael Ivanov got the Blue Jays off to a quick start with a third-place finish in a time of 1:29.13. The Blue Jays' B and C entries also placed in the top 10 with eighth and ninth-place showings, respectively.
The Blue Jays' top individual performance on the day came in the 500 free as sophomore
Josiah March placed third in the A final with a time of 4:32.40.
With three individuals in the A final of the 200 IM, the Blue Jays picked up their most significant point total in any individual event on day one. The trio of
Matthew Hartshorn (5
th / 1:52.04),
Larry Yu (6th / 1:52.86) and
Willi Dunlap (8
th / 1:53.81) all turned in strong swims in a highly-competitive A final, while
Bryce Lloyd won the B final (1:54.34), narrowly edging out teammate
Julian Maycock (1:54.38) at the wall.
The Blue Jays would close out the day with sixth and seventh-place finishes in the B final of 50 free. Ivanov clocked in a 21.07 to grab sixth-place, while
Christian Mayr was just behind at 21:21 to grab seventh.
Day two of the H2ounds Invitational will begin on Saturday morning at 10 am with the prelims with the finals starting at 6 pm.
