BALTIMORE, MD – The Johns Hopkins men's swimming team jumped into second place after the second day of Loyola University Maryland's H2ounds Invitational on Saturday. The Blue Jays have totaled 1,074 points through two days of competition and trail only the host Greyhounds (2,356). Rounding out the top five in the team standings are Division I programs Colgate (799), Rider (729) and Howard (712).
Senior
Avery Clapp got the Blue Jays off to a quick start on day two as he placed fifth in the A final in the 100 fly as he touched in 48.79. The Blue Jays also got a first-place finish in the B final from freshman
Kai Henrikson-Brandt (49.08).
The Blue Jays placed four in the A final of the 400 IM and grabbed each of the even-placed finishes in the nine-man race. Senior
Matthew Hartshorn narrowly missed out on the top spot as he was edged at the wall after touching home in 3:55.03, while
Alessandro Pereira (4
th / 3:58.01),
Larkin Helman (6
th / 3:59.47) and
Julian Maycock (8
th / 4:06.80) rounded out the four A finalists for Johns Hopkins.
Johns Hopkins would go one-two in the B final of the 200 free with sophomore
Josiah March clocking in at 1:41.10 to win the heat, while
Larry Yu was just behind in 11th (1:41.50). Marach and Yu were the top two finishers among the four Blue Jays in the B final.
A pair of A finalists and the top two finishers in the B final fueled the Blue Jays' efforts in the 100 breast. Sophomore
Jonathan Wang (56.83) and freshman
Justin Ely (57.08) were eighth and ninth, respectively, in the A race, while freshmen
Michael Ivanov won the B final (56.97) and was followed closely by teammate
Carl Stauffer (57.78).
Henrikson-Brandt added another strong swim in the 200 back as he finished fourth in the A final (48.91), while teammate
Dylan Jewett (49.80) added a sixth-place showing. Clapp won the B final in 49.24 with fellow senior
Bryce Lloyd touching in 50.17 to finish second.
In the final event of the day, the 200 free relay, the Blue Jays would grab two of the top seven spots to earn valuable points in the team standings. JHU's A team of Ivanov, Clapp, Aiden Li and
Christian Mayr turned in a strong performance with a fourth-place finish in a time of 1:22.19. The Jays' B team of Jewett,
Adam Sandid, Ely and Henrikson-Brandt added a seventh-place showing with a time of 1:24.31.
The H2ounds Invitational will wrap up on Sunday with preliminaries scheduled for 10 am and final scheduled to begin at 6 pm.
