BALTIMORE, MD – Second-ranked Johns Hopkins beat 12
th-ranked Dickinson, 4-1, on Saturday night to win its seventh straight Centennial Conference Championship. The Blue Jays extend their win streak to 18 as they improve to 19-1, while the Red Devils slip to 18-3.
It is the Blue Jays' ninth Centennial Conference Tournament title and 11
th Centennial title overall. The seven consecutive titles are one shy of the conference record.
Megan Chang was named the tournament MVP.
Grace Waldeck put the Blue Jays on the board early with her 10
th goal of the season. Chang dribbled across the top of the circle and sent the ball towards the cage. Waldeck knocked down the pass and then lifted the ball over Taylor Morrow and into the cage just 5:25 into the game.
It took nearly 36 minutes for the Blue Jays to find the back of the cage again. But when they did, they got two goals in just over seven minutes. After a Morrow save,
Sophia Albano tipped the rebound towards the middle of the circle and Chang poked it home with 3:52 to play in the third. Hopkins pushed its lead to three 4:04 into the fourth off the stick of
Evie Hamm.
Zoey Bennett slipped a pass through two defenders to Hamm, who took one touch and then fired a shot to the back post.
Dickinson ended JHU's bid at the shutout just 68 seconds later. Gillian Rosenstock hit a long pass from the endline through the circle and Megan McClure tipped it in at the left post. Hopkins answered late in the quarter after a great hustle play by Bennett. She raced up the middle of the field to intercept a Red Devils' pass, setting up
Caeli Robinson's goal with 1:44 to play.
Aubrey Kilgore finished with two saves in three quarters, while
Jessica Lapidus played one quarter without facing a shot. Morrow notched 10 saves in the loss for the Red Devils. Hopkins outshot Dickinson, 19-4, and had a 10-4 advantage in corners.
Hopkins will learn its next opponent with the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket on Sunday, November 9 at 9:00 pm.
Notes: Chang is now tied for 23rd in JHU history with 21 career goals and is tied for 24th with 54 career points.
