MEMPHIS, TN – Second-ranked Pomona-Pitzer won four of six singles' matches to beat seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins, 4-3, in the ITA National Team Indoor Championship Quarterfinals Friday. The Blue Jays slip to 5-2 on the season and will face Washington University in the consolation draw.
Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead after picking up the doubles' point. Amelia Poor and Nyakiriri Kanefu won 6-4 over
Jay Xiao and
Lia Melvin at number two doubles.
Sahana Madala and
Sydney Langer answered with a 6-4 win versus Annique Varty and Sofia Kalyva at three. That set up number one doubles to decide the doubles' point.
Ava Li and
Kamila Wong grabbed the point for the Blue Jays as the beat Meha Chaudhary and Marrissa Markey 7-6 (1).
Angie Zhou then tied the match at one when she defeated
Sophia Kim 6-3, 6-2 at number one singles. Leticia Bazua Vazquez gave the Sagehens the lead as she won by retirement at six over Wong 4-6, 6-0, 3-0. Kanefu pushed Pomona's lead to 3-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Langer at number four.
Li responded with a come-from-behind win over Markey 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 at three to make it a 3-2 match. Lauren Rha clinched then win for the Sagehens with a come-from-behind win at two over Xiao 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Sahana Sanjeev closed out the match with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Poor at number five.
