MEMPHIS, TN – Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 4-1 lead and went on to beat sixth-ranked Washington University, 4-3, in the consolation semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship. The Blue Jays improve to 5-2 on the season while handing the Bears their first loss.
Washington University won the first match as Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui won 6-2 at number one doubles over
Ava Li and
Kamila Wong. Hopkins answered with wins at two and three to take the doubles' point.
Jay Xiao and
Lia Melvin answered with a 6-3 win over Eliana Hanna and Ally Lin at two.
Sydney Langer and
Sahana Madala then secured the point with a 6-3 victory over Amber Edmonds and Sam Slowik.
Hanna opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Langer at number three, tying the match at one. Melvin responded with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lin at five to put the Blue Jays back on top, 2-1.
Sahana Sanjeev then beat Nina Moravek 6-4, 6-0 at number four to stake Hopkins to a 3-1 lead.
Madala clinched the win for JHU when she beat Edmonds 6-3, 6-2 at number six. Bui grabbed a point for the Bears when she won a tight 6-4, 7-6 (2) match over LI at two. Archer then wrapped up the match with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 win over Xiao at number one.
Hopkins will now take on third-ranked Wesleyan in the fifth-place match on Sunday at the Leftwich Tennis Center.
Notes: This is Hopkins' first win over Washington University in just the second meeting between the two programs. The Blue Jays and Bears last met in the 2018 ITA National Team Indoor fifth-place match, which the Bears won 5-0.
