CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA –
Avery Clapp smashed his own school record and Johns Hopkins posted 11 NCAA B qualifying times on the third and final day of the Cavalier Invitational.
Hopkins kicked off the evening with a one-two finish in the 1650 Free.
Jack Cornish led the way with a swim of 15:36.51, an NCAA B and career-best time.
Josiah March followed in 15:53.41 for second place. Clapp then broke his own school record in the 200 Back – twice. He broke it first in the prelim with a swim of 1:45.35, just two-hundredths of a second off his record. Clapp followed that with a swim of 1:44.32 in the finals, to finish in third place. His time is also an NCAA B qualifying time.
Dylan Jewett took sixth in the race with an NCAA B time of 1:48.35.
The Blue Jays then went one-two-three in the 100 Free.
Daniel Byrnes touched the wall in a career-best swim of 45.91 for the win.
Christian Mayr touched in 46.20 and
Larkin Helman in 46.31. Helman's prelim swim of 46.21 is a career best. JHU followed with first and second place finishes in the 200 Breast.
Joe Castagno led the way with an NCAA B time of 1:58.95 while
Eric Ji finished in 2:01.47.
Matthew Hartshorn also placed fourth (2:04.04) and
Julian Maycock placed fifth (2:04.97).
Rad Couture won the 200 Fly, as he beat the field to the wall with an NCAA B and career-best swim of 1:49.00. Hopkins then went one-two in the 400 Free Relay. The team of
Jay Heymann, Clapp,
Adam Sandid and Byrnes turned in an NCAA B time of 3:00.31. The team of Helman, Mayr,
Andrew Gilbert and March finished in 3:07.65.
Ji posted an NCAA B time of 2:00.59 in the 200 Breast time trial. The 200 Medley Relay team of
Aden Li,
Jonathan Wang, Clapp and Mayr did the same, with a time of 1:28.12. The quartet's time is the third fastest in program history. The 800 Free Relay team of Lloyd, Byrnes, March and Helman also posted an NCAA B time of 6:38.12 in a time trial. In addition, Li (48.57) and Bryce (1:46.60) turned in NCAA B times in the 100 Fly and 200 Back time trials, respectively.
