Zheng Earns 300th Career Win; JHU Defeats NYU and MIT

CHAPEL HILL, NC – Senior Alan Zheng earned his 300th career win and Johns Hopkins grabbed wins over NYU and MIT on Sunday at the Miller Invitational. The Blue Jays are now 20-12 on the season, their third straight 20-win season and 10th under head coach Austin Young.
 
Hopkins opened the day against Brandeis, ranked third in Division III, and fell 17-10. In the Sabre, Sam Roberts, Alex Jeffords and Leonid Kotov won one bout each in a 6-3 loss. Spencer Grossman Smisek won two of his bouts in a tough 5-4 loss for the Foil squad. And in the Epee, Jorge Gana won twice in a 6-3 loss for the Blue Jays.
 
JHU rebounded with a 15-12 win over NYU, ranked number one in Division III and 11th overall. Neil Pandey went 3-0 to lead the Sabre squad to a 7-2 win. Zheng won two of three bouts, including his 300th win, as the Foil squad lost 7-2. Gana went undefeated and the Epee squad won 6-3.
 
The Blue Jays then fell, 18-9, to the second-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Pandey won twice as the Sabre squad lost a close 5-4 decision. Zheng earned two wins to lead the Foil squad in a 6-3 loss. In the Epee, Ayan Bhatnagar and Matthew Dao each won once in a 7-2 loss.
 
Hopkins then earned a 19-8 win over MIT, ranked fourth in Division III. Alex Pan and Zheng each went 3-0 to lead the Sabre and Foil squads to 7-2 wins. Dao and Gana then won twice each, with Dao clinching a 5-4 win in the Epee.
 
The Blue Jays lost to the host North Carolina Tar Heels, 20-7. Bhatnagar won twice, including the clinching win, in a 5-4 win for the Epee squad. Pandey won twice in a 7-2 loss for the Sabre squad. Hopkins then wrapped up the weekend with a 17-10 loss to 10th-ranked Duke. Gana won each of his three bouts to lead the Epee squad to a 7-2 win. Zheng won two of his three in a 7-2 for the Foil squad and Jeffords earned the Jays' only win in the Sabre.
 
Hopkins returns to action next weekend at Stevens.
 
Notes: Zheng is the sixth fencer, in any weapon, in program history to eclipse 300 wins • Zheng now ranks third in career Foil wins (307) • Gana ranks seventh in career Epee wins (232) and Dao ranks 11th (199).
