Three-Peat! Johns Hopkins Wins 2025 MACFA Championship

MADISON, NJ – Johns Hopkins claimed its third straight and 33rd overall Mid-Atlantic Fencing Collegiate Association (MACFA) Championship on Sunday. The Blue Jays also took home the Sabre and Foil squad championships, as well as individual titles in the Sabre and Foil.
 
Hopkins dominated in the Sabre squad championship, going an impressive 35-1. It is the Blue Jays' third straight Sabre title and 31st overall. Sam Roberts went 10-0 in pool B and then won all four of his bouts in the individual championship to claim the title. The Blue Jays have won two straight Sabre individual titles and four of the last five. Roberts is now 74-38 on the season and ranks second on the Sabre squad in wins.
 
Also competing in the Sabre, Neil Pandey finished in a tie for third. He went 11-1 in pool A and then 2-1 in the individual championship as he fell to Roberts in the semifinals. Pandey is 76-23 on the season and his 76 wins are tied for second most by a freshman (Sabre) in JHU history. Alex Jeffords went 12-0 in pool C and then lost in the first round of the individual championship to place 10th overall.
 
The Blue Jay Foil squad finished pool play with a 29-7 record to win their third straight title and 21st overall. Alan Zheng went 9-3 in pool A and then 4-0 in the individual championship to claim his second career title (2023). Hopkins has produced three straight Foil champions and 18 overall. Omar Reyes went 10-2 in pool C and then went 1-1 in the individual championship to finish eighth overall. Spencer Grossman Smisek finished pool B with a 10-2 record and then lost in the first round of individuals to place 10th.
 
Hopkins went 28-8 in the Epee to finish as the runner-up. Ethan Insler finished in a tie for third to lead the Blue Jays. He went 10-1 in pool B and then advanced to the semifinals, where he lost to the eventual champion. Jorge Gana finished pool A with a 10-2 record and then went 1-1 in the individual championship to finish fifth overall.
 
Also competing in pool play in the Epee, Darius Kim went 0-1 in pool B, while Ayan Bhatnagar went 5-3 (pool C) and Matthew Dao finished 3-1 (pool C).
 
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, March 8 at the NCAA Regional Championships.
 
Notes: Zheng now ranks second in Johns Hopkins' history with 320 career Foil wins. He needs 17 wins to tie Kevin Little for the program record • Grossman Smisek ranks eighth in JHU history with 238 career Foil wins • Gana is now third with 261 career Epee wins and needs 12 to tie Michael Fleisher for second all-time • Jeffords ranks 17th with 179 career Sabre wins • Bhatnagar earned his 100th career win.
