NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Johns Hopkins dropped a 5-2 decision to fifth-ranked Wesleyan Thursday afternoon at Christopher Newport. The Blue Jays slip to 7-6 on the season in their seventh match versus a ranked opponent. The Cardinals improve to 6-1 on the season.
Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead thanks to a pair of 6-4 wins at number two and three doubles.
Sophia Kim and
Sahana Sanjeev took the first win of the match at number three over Lucinda Gatsiounis and Olivia Chalik.
Jay Xiao and
Lia Melvin then secured the doubles' point with their win over Jackie Soloveychik and Natalia Leroy at two. Lane Durkin and Sarah Youngberg prevented a JHU sweep with a tight 7-6 (2) win over
Sydney Langer and
Sahana Madala at number one.
Wesleyan responded by winning five of six singles' matches to take the team win. Soloveychik evened the match at 1-1 when she beat Xiao 6-2, 6-2 at number one. Madala put the Blue Jays back on top with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Chalik at six. Gatsiounis tied the match at 2-2 as she beat Sanjeev 6-0, 6-0 at five.
Youngberg then put Wesleyan on top for the first time when she won 7-6 (7), 6-1 over Langer at number three. Durkin clinched the win for the Cardinals with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win over Kim at two. Leroy then closed out the win when she beat Melvin 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-5 at number four.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, March 21 against 30
th-ranked NYU.
