Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Johns Hopkins won four of six singles' matches to secure a 5-2 win over 30
th-ranked New York University Friday evening at Christopher Newport. The Blue Jays improve to 8-6 on the season while the Violets fall to 4-2.
Hopkins took an early 1-0 lead with wins at numbers two and three doubles to take the doubles' point. The Blue Jays then secured the win by winning four of the six singles matches.
Jay Xiao and
Lia Melvin grabbed a 6-4 win over Jimena Menendez and Emma Kast at number two doubles.
Sophia Kim and
Sahana Sanjeev then clinched the doubles' point with a 7-6 (4) victory at three over Hannah Chang and Norah Staunton. Isabella Hartman and Victoria Wang earned a win for the Violets as they beat
Sahana Madala and
Sydney Langer, 6-2, at number one.
Langer, Melvin and Madala dropped just two games each in their wins at numbers three, four and six singles to pick up three points for the Blue Jays. Langer beat Wang 6-1, 6-1 at three while Melvin and Madala each won by a 6-2, 6-0 score at four and six, respectively.
Sanjeev also won in straight sets, beating Staunton 7-5,6-2 at number five singles. NYU picked up two points with wins at one and two. Menendez won a close 7-6 (4), 7-5 match at one over Xiao. And Hartman earned a 6-1, 6-4 win over Kim at two.
Hopkins returns to the court on Sunday, March 23 as the Blue Jays take on the Case Western Reserve Spartans at 9:00 am in Newport News.
