BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins shutout visiting Mount St. Mary's, 7-0, in the Blue Jays' home opener Sunday afternoon. Hopkins improves to 7-3 on the season while Mount St. Mary's falls to 1-9.
The Mount took the first match when Bella Pescatore and Venus Tang beat
Lia Melvin and
Jay Xiao 6-1 at number one doubles. The Blue Jays answered with wins at two and three doubles to secure the doubles' point.
Sydney Langer and
Sahana Madala won 6-1 at two over Amari O'Brien and Margherita Trolese.
Catharina Ausfahl and
Sophia Kim then defeated Valentine Mudry and Kaajal Ramisetty, 7-5, to put Hopkins up 1-0.
The Blue Jays quickly pushed their lead 4-0 in the match as Kim, Langer and
Sahana Sanjeev dropped a total of just five games in their wins at one, two and three singles. Kim took the first singles' point with a 6-0, 6-1 win at one versus Trolese. Langer followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Tang at two and Sanjeev won by the same score at three against Ramisetty.
Madala put Hopkins up 5-0 when she won 6-3, 6-1 at five over Pescatore. Zhou then won by the same score at six over Mudry. Melvin wrapped up the match with a hard-fought 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (9) win at four over O'Brien. Melvin trailed 9-6 in the 10-point tiebreaker and held off three match points before rallying to win 11-9.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, March 14 as the Blue Jays host the Morgan State Bears. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start at the Johns Hopkins Tennis Courts.
