NEWPORT NEWS, VA – Johns Hopkins beat host and 24
th-ranked Christopher Newport, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays win their fifth straight match and improve to 10-7 overall while the Captains fall to 10-8.
The Captains took the first point of the match as they won two of three doubles' matches to take the point.
Allen Gong and
Chakor Rajendra took the first match with a 6-2 win over Edvard Porsmyr Hansen and Gabe Smith at number two. Vincent Truong and Ashton Legum answered with a 6-3 win at one over
Daniel Ardila and
Dylan Blenkiron. Rainer Christiansen and Alex Seretis then secured the doubles' point with a close 6-4 win over
Marco Azar and
Pranav Gadiraju.
The Blue Jays didn't need long to tie the match thanks to a 6-2, 6-1 win by Gong over Legum at number five singles. That kicked off a stretch of five straight wins for Hopkins as the Jays pushed out to a 5-1 lead. Rajendra gave JHU its first lead with a 6-1, 6-4 win at two over Ryan Monroe. Azar followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at six over Smith.
Hanyu Liu then clinched the win with a 6-4, 7-5 victory at number three versus Nesh Kumaresan.
Zahari Stoimenov then beat Porsmyr Hansen 6-3, 7-5 at four to make it 5-1 Blue Jays. Truong prevented the singles' sweep with a three-set win over Blenkiron at one.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, April 26 as the Blue Jays host the Haverford Fords. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start.
