Johns Hopkins Defeats #14 Babson, 4-2, in NCAA Second Round

MIDDLEBURY, VT – Johns Hopkins defeated Babson, 4-2, in a top-15 match-up in the NCAA Second Round Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 13-7 and advance to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the third straight and 16th time overall. The Beavers end their season at 15-6.
 
Hopkins rallied in doubles with wins at two and three to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Olivia Soffer and Matia Cristiani won 6-0 over Jay Xiao and Sophia Kim at number one doubles. Sahana Madala and Sydney Langer answered with a 6-2 win at three versus Dana Kamal and Mia Sorrentino to leave the doubles point up to the winner on court two. Kamila Wong and Ava Li grabbed the win and the point as they beat Chaniel Soffer and Alessandra Cristiani, 6-4.
 
Riya Mathroo tied the match for Babson when she beat Sahana Sanjeev 6-1, 7-5 at number two singles. Li answered with a 6-2, 7-5 win at four over Chaniel Soffer to put Hopkins back up 2-1. Lia Melvin then rallied to beat Alessandra Cristiani 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 at three and the Blue Jays led 3-1.
 
Olivia Soffier pulled the Beavers back within one when she came from behind for a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-1 win at one over Langer. Madala then grabbed a straight sets win on number five to clinch the win for the Blue Jays. She won 6-4, 6-2 over Kamila Stasiowska.
 
Hopkins will now take on host and third-ranked Middlebury on Sunday for a spot in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The match is scheduled for a 12:00 pm start.
 
Notes: The win is the 14th for head coach Michael Herman, second most by a first year head coach in program history.
