CLAREMONT, CA – Johns Hopkins run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end Wednesday afternoon with a 4-1 loss to 16
th-ranked Washington University in the semifinals. The Blue Jays end their season at 16-8 in just their second-ever appearance in the national semifinals.
The Bears grabbed wins at one and three doubles to take the doubles' point. It was the Blue Jays that took the first win of the match when
Kamila Wong and
Ava Li beat Amber Edmonds and Sam Slowik, 6-2, at number two. Eleanor Archer and Caitlin Bui, ranked fourth in the nation, answered for Washington University with a 6-4 win over
Jay Xiao and
Lia Melvin at one. That left the doubles' point up to the teams on court three, and it was the Bears' Eliana Hanna and Ally Lin that prevailed, pulling out a 7-5 win over
Sydney Langer and
Sahana Madala.
Bui, ranked 11
th in the nation in singles, pushed Washington University's lead to two when she beat Langer 6-0, 6-4 at number two. Wong answered for Hopkins and got the Blue Jays on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win at six over Nina Moravek.
Hanna pushed the Bears' lead back to two when she won a hard-fought match at three over
Sahana Sanjeev. She won both sets 7-5 to put Washington up 3-1. Lin closed out the match when she rallied for a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 win over Melvin at number four. When the match ended, courts one and five were each in a third set, with the Blue Jays'
Sophia Kim and Li up in the deciding set.
Xiao, Wong and Li's seasons will continue at the NCAA Singles & Doubles Championships, which is set to begin on Saturday, May 24.
Notes: Hopkins' 16 wins this season are the second most for a head coach in their first season.
