COLLEGEVILLE, PA – The Johns Hopkins women's outdoor track and field team is dominating the Centennial Conference Championship at Ursinus after two days of competition, amassing 148.5 points to build a commanding lead over second-place Swarthmore (57 points).
The Blue Jays' 4x800-meter relay team of
Emily Roskowski,
Elena Blodnikar,
Lena Cakulev and
Diana Valentini captured the Centennial Conference title with a time of 9:20.65—the ninth-fastest mark in program history. It marks the second consecutive year and fifth time overall that a Hopkins squad has won gold in this event.
Johns Hopkins went 2-3-4-5 in the heptathlon to pick up 23 points in the team standings. Freshman
Claudia Ouimet grabbed a silver medal as she totaled 4,548 points to place second. The Blue Jays got a bronze-medal showing from
Jaclyn Donoho (4,254) and
Abigail Lovelace (4,030) and
Julia Widen (3,591) rounded out the top-five finishers for the Blue Jays. Ouimet finished in the top two in five of the seven events and her silver is the seventh in the event for Johns Hopkins since 2013. Donoho adds bronze to the silver she earned in the event a year ago.
After grabbing 23 points in the heptathlon, the Blue Jays flashed their depth again in the steeplechase as they went 2-3-4 to earn 19 points. Freshman
Carter Brotherton placed second with a personal-best time of 10:57.93, a mark that is also the 22
nd-best in the nation.
Sydney Shock (11:20.17) and
Eleni Alvarez (11:24.17) placed third and fourth, respectively, to round out Hopkins' top three in the event. Brotherton's silver is the second in program history and the two medals boost Hopkins' all-time medal count in the steeplechase to 13.
Donoho added a silver in the high jump to her bronze in the heptathlon as she cleared 1.55-meters to earn her runner-up finish.
In the long jump, sophomore
Chloe Zhang took silver with a 5.61-meter leap—the 42
nd-best in the nation this season and the sixth silver in JHU history. Senior
Sara Bartlett added five points with a fourth-place finish and a 5.53-meter jump, ranked 58
th nationally.
In the discus throw,
Erika Ezumba and
Kellen Ievers combined for nine points. Ezumba placed fourth (38.78 meters), while Ievers was fifth (36.61 meters).
The Blue Jays also made a strong statement in the preliminary rounds, qualifying athletes in five different events: the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, and 400-meter hurdles.
In the 100-meter dash,
Mirra Klimov led the field with a program-record time of 11.67—also the third-fastest in the nation this season.
Ellie Lewis,
Anna Zinsser and
Clair Wang also qualified, with Lewis running the eighth-fastest time in school history (12.27).
Lewis and Zinsser returned to qualify in the 200-meter dash alongside
Ryan Bigelow, with both Lewis (25.34) and Zinsser (26.00) setting personal bests.
Lauren Phillips and Bigelow qualified for the 400-meter dash final, with Phillips setting a meet record and posting the nation's 10th-fastest time this year (55.24).
In the 800-meter run,
Lily Tremba,
Kayla Ritzman and
Alexa Christensen moved on to the final. Ritzman (2:23.01) and Christensen (2:23.10) each set new personal bests.
Rounding out the evening, three Blue Jays advanced to the 400-meter hurdles final.
Lianne Saussy led all qualifiers with a time of 1:04.19—the 53
rd-fastest in the nation.
Lorna Arcese and
Evelyn Kim also secured spots in the final.
Hopkins return to action Sunday May 4, for the final day of the Centennial Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, with action scheduled to begin at 11 AM in the shot put.
