Scott Smith, who recently wrapped up a standout career with the Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse team, was selected by the Maryland Whipsnakes with the 17
th overall pick in the 2025 PLL College Draft on Wednesday (May 6) evening. Dating back to inaugural PLL Draft in 2019, Smith becomes the seventh Johns Hopkins player to be selected in the PLL Draft.
With the 2025 honors still to be announced, Smith has already twice earned USILA and Inside Lacrosse All-America honors (2023-HM / 2024-1
st Team) and added Second Team USA Lacrosse honors (2
nd Team) in 2024. He is a three-time All-Big Ten honoree with first team honors in 2024 and second team honors in 2023 and 2025.
Smith was a fourth-round selection (30
th overall) in the 2024 PLL Draft, but opted to return to Johns Hopkins for a fifth year in 2025. He capped his career having played in 64 games with 58 starts and amassed eight goals, one assist, 145 ground balls and 70 caused turnovers. He finished his career ranked second in Johns Hopkins history in career turnovers with a personal-best 23 CTs in 2023.
The Whipsnakes, who play their home games at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field, feature one other former Blue Jay on their current roster in long stick midfielder
Alex Mazzone, who played as a graduate student at Johns Hopkins in 2023, when he and Smith helped lead the Blue Jays to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
Blue Jay fans in the Baltimore area will get to see Smith the Whipsnakes at Homewood Field on June 21
st and 22
nd, when they host the Boston Cannons (June 21 / 7 pm) and the Carolina Chaos (June 22 / 2:30 pm).
