BALTIMORE, MD – Johns Hopkins scored two goals each in the second and third quarters to top visiting Washington & Lee in both teams' season opener Friday night. The Blue Jays open the season with a win for the 14
th consecutive year.
After a scoreless first quarter, the teams combined to score three goals in just five minutes late in the second.
Megan Chang opened the scoring at 24:56 when she fired home a pass from
Jenna Halpin off a
Sophia Albano penalty corner. Less than three minutes later, Britty Page redirected a pass from Madeline Lancione to tie the game at one.
Evie Hamm put the Blue Jays back on top with just 14.1 seconds remaining in the half as JHU capitalized on another corner. Chang received the corner from Albano, sent a behind-the-back pass to Hamm, who one-timed a shot from the top of the circle for her first career goal.
Hopkins pushed its lead to 4-1 with a pair of quick goals early in the third quarter. Halpin made it a two-goal lead when she converted a penalty stroke at 35:16. Just over four minutes later,
Grace Waldeck collected a centering pass from Chang and back-handed a shot inside the left post.
Washington & Lee had the final say of the game however, scoring with only 3.5 seconds left in the game. The Generals earned a late penalty corner and Lancione inserted to Charlotte Dreany at the top. Dreany took one touch to settle and fired a low shot inside the right post to make it a 4-1 final.
Chang's three points and two assists are both career highs. Waldeck is now tied for 19
th in program history with 22 career goals.
Hopkins finished with a 14-11 edge in shots and an 8-6 edge in corners.
Aubrey Kilgore and
Jessica Lapidus split time in the cage, with Kilgore making two saves in the first half and Lapidus posting five in the second. Julia McDonald made five saves for the Generals and got a defensive save from Page.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, August 31 as the Blue Jays take on sixth-ranked Christopher Newport. The game is slated for a 1:00 pm start in Fredericksburg, VA.
