FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Johns Hopkins scored twice in less than two minutes to tie the game, but Christopher Newport answered with two late goals to take the 5-3 win in a battle of top-10 teams Sunday afternoon. The fifth-ranked Blue Jays slip to 1-1 on the season with the sixth-ranked Captains improve to 2-0.
Hopkins struck first when
Grace Waldeck scored off a helper from
Megan Chang off a penalty corner at 8:36 in the first. Just 90 seconds later, Lindsey Loar scored off a rebound on a corner to knot the score at one.
Loar's goal sparked a 3-0 run by the Captains that spanned more than 29 minutes and saw them push out to a 3-1 lead with 9:31 to play in the third. Courtney Hughlett gave Christopher Newport the lead just 2:27 into the third quarter. Seven minutes later, Hughlett scored again and the Captains' lead was 3-1.
Hopkins battled back with two goals just two minutes apart to tie the game. As the clock ticked under a minute in the third quarter, the Blue Jays forced a turnover deep in the Captains' end and
Sophia Builione banged it home to make it 3-2. Just 73 seconds into the fourth quarter Builione fired home a loose ball in the circle and the teams were tied at three.
Christopher Newport answered late in regulation with goals from Gigi Stephen and Avery Mast in a 58-second span to go up 5-3 with 4:30 to play and that would do it.
Aubrey Kilgore and
Jessica Lapidus split time in the cage for the Blue Jays. Kilgore tallied a career-high 13 saves in the first half. Lapidus made one save in the second half. Lily Kerr finished with five saves in the win for the Captains.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 6 at 14
th-ranked Rowan. Game time at Coach Richard Wackar Stadium is slated for 5:00 pm.
